Civic Centre, Salford

RPS Group were commissioned by Salford City Council to produce a Stage 3 design package associated with modifications to the heating and hot water systems to the Civic Centre in Swinton.

The project was completed within 22 weeks and was part of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. It’s one of several that we have completed on behalf of Salford council.

Our Mechanical & Electrical Division completed the works undertaking the replacement and refurbishment of all mechanical and electrical works in-house. We undertook the design of mechanical services from BSRIA Stage 3- 6.

The mechanical works included the replacement of a Gas Fired Heating plant and replacement of the gas fired water heater with heat pump technology. A range of Mitsubishi heat pumps were used on the project.

Works also included trace heated primary circuit distribution LPHW pipework from the heat pumps to the existing plantroom, pressurisation unit and expansion vessel, dosing pot, air and dirt separator and primary and secondary circulating pumps and new distribution and pipework.
New primary, secondary and DHWS heat pressurization systems and expansion vessels were also installed.

The existing gas hot water heater system was replaced with HRS Aquasave ASE and new generation trend controls systems were installed to provide temperature and time control of the new systems which included the integration of the Mitsubishi Heat Pumps.

Further system modifications included the retainment & refurbishment of over 200 existing column pattern cast iron radiators and replacements of TRV & LSV’s and re-piping of the systems. RPS undertook all water treatment of systems and commissioning in line with CIBSE codes.

Our electrical works included the application for an upgraded electricity connection to support a minimum loads of 460kw. Isolation and strip- out of all redundant electrical services to the existing plantroom and the installation of all new electrical works, including a new main switchboard, external power to pipework and design of electrical services from BSRIA Stage 3-6 to support the replacement of the mechanical installations.

The impressive project will result in lower carbon footprint for the council and a reduction in energy costs comparative to the old systems. As a result of the investment in a range of council buildings RPS Group where able to engage with the local community and create more than 14 employment opportunities.
