Project Description
The Grange ASHP Installation – Blackpool Council – Blackpool
As part of the Grange Park housing estate sustainability and carbon reduction project, RPS undertook the design, supply, and installation of a commercial air source heat pump (ASHP) system to replace the existing gas boilers in the @thegrange building.
@thegrange is a multi-use community site, comprising a community building, community shop, café, pharmacy, and a One stop shop.
In response to the global climate emergency, Blackpool Council took a proactive stance by declaring a climate emergency on June 26, 2019. With a commitment to carbon neutrality and the use of clean energy throughout its services by 2030, the council aims to address its 3% contribution to Blackpool’s carbon emissions. Collaborating with local partners and residents, the council embarked on initiatives to bring about significant changes. The Grange Park sustainability and carbon reduction project comprises a number of projects to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and improve the community’s resilience to climate change including:
- Housing improvement retrofit works to reduce energy consumption
- @thegrange renewables project
- Tree Planting
- Cycle works
- Eco Coaching
RPS selected two Mitsubishi CAHV-P500YB-HPB 3-phase ASHP units for the project. These units were integrated with the existing Cylon Building Management System (BMS) to optimise the efficiency and control of the heating system. This choice of equipment and integration allowed for effective climate control while aligning with the council’s clean energy goals.
RPS collaborated closely with Blackpool Council to deliver a high-quality installation within the prescribed timeframe. The coordinated efforts ensured that the project’s goals were achieved. The successful integration of the ASHP system, combined with existing solar energy infrastructure, has yielded impressive results for The Grange community centre.
Andrew Duckett, Service Manager, Blackpool Council said “So far, @thegrange community centre has been self-sustaining for the past 3 months, with no electricity or gas consumption charges. RPS Group has an excellent, knowledgeable, professional, and timely service.”
